Starting a window cleaning business for under $ 200 is perhaps one of the cheapest start ups out there with the greatest return on investment and highest chance of success. Window cleaning does not take a lot of training before you can begin making money and is something you do not need a specialty degree in.
Window cleaning in fact is one of the few businesses out there that anyone can get into right away with very little experience and have the opportunity to make $ 100,000 a year after just a couple of years in the business. The most important ingredient for success is the drive to start your own business and to perfect your work. If you are not scared to leave the 9-5 day job and go for it, then you should do just fine.
Someone starting out with the basics that cost less then $ 200 should find work within a few days. You will need to purchase some basic window cleaning supplies before you hit the road to success. You of course will need some sort of transportation although I guess it is possible you could walk.
The basic supplies for starting out can be found at your local janitor supply sort and if not there then you can always order online. Just look up professional window cleaning supplies online. Here are the bare bones list of things you will need, a T-bar, washing sleeve, six inch scrapper, a squeegee handle, squeegee channel, 5 gallon bucket, dawn ultra, 5-6 foot wooden pole, surgical towels. With these basic items you can clean windows and get paid.
I personally recommend a few extra items however, to make your experience a little smother. I would add a bucket holster with belt, a scrapper holster, an extra bucket for holding rags. I would also purchase extra scrapper blades and extra rubber for the squeegee as these wear out after a few cleanings.
You put the washing sleeve on the T-bar and this is your scrubber that you will soak in your bucket to wash the window. When you fill up the bucket full of water you simply give it a good squirt of the Dawn Ultra and mix it around. Dawn Ultra works great and is very inexpensive. The squeegee channel goes in the squeegee handle and is used to squeegee the water off the window for a clean dry result. The scrapper is used to take paint, and bird poop off the window. You should only scrape the windows when they are wet. So wet the window, scrape if needed, then wet it again and then squeegee. The wooden pole is to reach the higher windows. The surgical towels are to wipe the edges of the windows for detailing which should be done after every squeegee run on the window.
You are now ready to go hit up some single story homes and store front businesses. If your first job is a residential home you should make back your investment with your first job. If you do store fronts then you will need to do a handful. It depends on how large the storefront is however. Before you go our however you should practice using your new equipment on your own windows several times until you get the hang of it. I also recommend looking up some videos on window cleaning technique on you tube. Remember you do not want to have any water on the window once you have cleaned it. So be sure to spot check.
